Untitled, by Mary Cox

We arrived with him
and a sliver of God
We pretended we knew
how this would end
We foolishly believed
in God and ourselves
We filled sad halls
with laughter and life
We lowered our eyes
as others rolled out
We arrived with him
and a sliver of God
We limped away
with bloody knees
We uncurled our hands
stiff from useless prayers
We reeked of panic
breathless from desperate cries
We arrived with him
and a sliver of God
We kissed our last goodbye
then left God behind
